PCR 2026 Director Ocean (Lisa SG) shares this piece about hosting an Ancestral supper. An Ancestral Supper is a shared meal held to honor and remember those who came before us. Through food, reflection, and fellowship, we create space to celebrate our ancestors. We share their stories, and connect with their enduring presence in our lives. Ocean says,

“Traditional witchcraft sets the stage for connecting with your ancestors. As the veil thins, invite your ancestors in for a feast in their honor. In this piece, I talk about the ancestral supper. A silent meal where your guests, the spirits, may be the ones doing the talking.”

The Ancestral Supper

By Ocean (Lisa SG)

Walking into the room feels eerie.  Silence is a heavy presence walking at your side.  The smell of delicious food wafts through the air, echoing with rosemary and thyme.

The flickering lights of burning candles lead you to the table.  It’s set for 12 and 10 are seated.  People turn to you in greeting but no one says a word.  The symphony of the wind in the trees are the only sounds in this sacred place.  The seat at the head of the table is empty and the seat at the opposite is waiting for you.

This is the ancestral supper.  The traditional term is “dumb supper” but this term is not the most polite way to open the gates to the silent meal of which you will partake.

The ancestral supper is a witch’s feast where the guests of honor are the spirits of your kin – ancestors of your flesh, of your culture, and of your heart.  At this special meal, it is traditional to set a place at the table for the spirits.  The empty seat and the plate of delicious food entice the spirits to join you.  The silence gives them room to speak.

What would your ancestors say if you gave them a gift of gratitude and welcome followed by the space for their voices to be heard?  Consider setting a place on the floor for your beloved pets who have gone on before, as well.  During the meal, think of your beloved dead.  Let the memories be your guide as to the message your ancestors leave behind.

When the meal is through, give the spirit food to the nature spirits, if you can.  If not, any ethical disposal is sufficient.  Let the ancestors have one more opportunity to show you what mattered to them and what they hope for you.  When the silence is broken, after the meal, you may share the memories that came to you.
